Wishing everyone, myself included, a much better year than 2006.  May you and your loved ones stay healthy, happy and read lots and lots of good books.
And blogs.  *g*  Don't forget to check out the Samhain blog, live every day except Sunday...and New Year's.  LOL  The schedule starts again on Tuesday.  And on Friday, Twelfth Night (trumpet fanfare, please), yours truly will try to come up with something amusing.
While you're waiting, you can rev up with some of those good books I was talking about.  Kate Johnson's "The Twelve Lies of Christmas" is already available for download at My Bookstore and More.  On January 2, yaoi fans can revel in Soul of the Night by Ann Cain and Barbara Sheridan, and on January 16, Ann Vremont's luscious erotic historical novel Sacred Heart Diaries hits the electronic stands.  Enjoy!

Sorry about the bump on SACRED HEART DIARIES, though. :-( It's such a good book, I want everyone to read it. *Right now!*
Thanks for the heads-up on Loves Romance. We've been incredibly lucky with the reviews, especially considering the number of characters. So far, only one reviewer had a real problem with that.
What fascinates me, though, is how every reviewer gets it just a little bit wrong. And they're all off in different ways. Reminds me of those writing exercises where you try to describe something for someone else to draw. Guess I need to work on that! LOL
Meanwhile, I'll just bask in the praise, glad they liked the book they read. :-)
Happy New Year hugs,

I notice that on a lot of reviews. What I don't like is when there's a middling (or worse) review that has its facts screwed up. Probably a double standard on my part (since I'll take glowing reviews with mixed up facts), but ought to get to delete those middling(worse)+bad facts reviews.

Getting it wrong

Do you think it's because it's a first read? Everybody picks up on different story elements - things that appeal to them, things they are predisposed to notice b/c of their own personal history, etc - and it creates perception differences...kind of like a literary astigmatism. Not WRONG per se, but slightly skewed.

A very good theory. :-)

Hey, peaches! *user waves*
It's possible, but I'd say it goes a bit further than astigmatism. LOL We're talking big, honking factual errors. Conflating the Vanyr and Chosen, for example. (Don would soooooo love to be Vanyr, but it ain't a happening thing in this or any other universe. *snerk*)
Leitmotifs are another matter. I expect perception distortion in in the interpretation of story elements and themes, regardless of how many times people read the book. Heck, I'm sure I'm not seeing the forest for the trees myself, and I co-wrote it. Though I suspect you're right; there will be more distortions of every type on the first run-through. Ideally, people are reading too fast the first time, because they're caught in the story and not worrying about its underpinnings.
Admittedly, I'm probably more sensitive to the mistakes because it's my baby. But I was a stickler for review accuracy at CB--even going so far as to rewrite passages with errors in fact. Never wrote a review without a copy of the book at hand to check all my assertions. But I'm sure I got it wrong, too, on occasion. And I'm sure not going to complain. :D
Hugs,
