I've used Eudora as my mail program for ages.  I's wonderful for filtering out spam, viruses, etc.  But every so often--usually around the time they introduce a new version--it randomly dumps YEARS of my inbox.  Tonight it just took me back to 2004.  Getting in touch with Qualcom (the manufacturer) is pointless.  They'll only tell me to upload the new version, which is exactly the same as the old version and never, ever restores the old mail, so why bother?
Can anyone suggest where the dumped mails might be hiding and how I can get them back?  Thanks!
Harried hugs,
Jean Marie

Can't help, I'm afraid. I've never used Eudora.

And now I know I never will -- thanks for the warning!

You sure you can't?

Nope. All out of blame today. Check back Monday. Hugs and grins, Jean Marie

I've got one of those too. The problem is you can't use it to dump a third party mail, i.e. Comcast mail, into your computer. For that you're pretty much stuck with Eudora or Outlook. And Outlook has problems that make Eudora look good.

A little google tickling suggests: http://helpdesk.doit.wisc.edu/page.php?id=879

But since I don't use Eudora...I cannot vouch.

Thanks {{{{{quietselkie}}}}}. Will try it. But "keep the in, out and trash mailboxes under 1 MB"--OUCH! What alternate reality is this mail program operating in?

Jean Marie

I dunno how old that tip sheet is, either, so it may not help. But yeah, it's a good idea to put everything into folders...a Virgo like you isn't more organized? Fershame, fershame!

It was in folders: In, Out & Trash. Why do they give you all those handy dandy organizational tools like "Name", "Date", "Subject", etc., if you're not supposed to let the machine do the sorting. I never had any trouble finding anything.
*blink*blink*
Hugs,
Jean Marie
*who just spent way too much time sorting through her Out and Trash boxes--the In box is history...again*

Yes, but you should be able to create *dozens* of local folders in which to file your e-mails -- a folder for each of your regular correspondents, just for starters. Have you asked Greg about this . . .?

Not to worry, {{{realthog}}}, I've been creating my very own email folders for years. However, given the number of my correspondents, it would be self-defeating organize the mail that way. The sheer volume would entail a series of nested folders. Once you get to that level, you're applying organization for organization's sake--never a very efficient means of operation.
Instead, I've created a series of dated archive folders. Once my In and Out boxes reach a certain size, I'll dump the bulk in an appropriate folder.
The irritating thing is I would've done that ages ago if somebody--ANYBODY--from Qualcom had bothered to mention this little "program feature" during any of the half dozen times I called. I mean, come on, who among us keeps their inboxes below 1 MB? Our Tech Support at the Pentagon couldn't enforce a 10 MB limit five years ago.
Hugs and headshakes,
Jean Marie

The term I used was "regular correspondents"; it'd obviously be bonkers to have a folder for each and every person who e-mailed you. That done, you could have a folder for, say, "miscellaneous artists" or "new projects" or "bills" or . . . into which you could sling whole categories of correspondents. (As example, I tend to have a separate folder for each publisher I work with to any substantial degree; I may or may not give individual staffers subfolders within those folders.)

Umm, I have that many regular correspondents. :D And not to worry, I have subject folders, all up-to-date. Henceforth, everything else will be dumped in the appropriate archive folders.
Thanks for the download.com link too.

Jean Marie

As for recovering the old mail, it might make sense to go to www.download.com and see if there's any free software you can download that'll let you extract the contents of your old Eudora .mbx files.

I've been able to perform this exercise with Outlook Express files salvaged when my hard drive has collapsed. Whether such software exists for Eudora is another matter, of course!

You know what the saddest thing about this is

I must've called Qualcom at six times with this problem over the years. Yet not one of their tech support people ever mentioned the program was unstable when the In, Out & Trash boxes exceed a certain size. If I'd known that, I would've set up archive files years ago.
Hugs and headshakes,
Jean Marie

I've found a screenshot of Eudora at http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2363hq.html (first pic).

Do you have folders like the ones called "Family Photos" and "Smith Family" in this pic? Those are the folders Selkie and I are talking about.

If you haven't created these, I might be able to talk you through the process, assuming Eudora functions much like Outlook Express (which it seems to).

Well, you should try to keep your inbox down a bit, JM. Aren't you filing your old e-mails in other folders?

Define "business". LOL
Apparently, the mailbox was corrupted beyond repair. I'm sure the data's somewhere on the old computer, but not in anyplace I can find.
So I set up some archive folders. Transfered what was left of the inbox and everything pre-2008 in my outbox. Then I went through the trash--name by name--saving, sorting and deleting as appropriate.
Thanks so much for the link, though. It explained the problem, which will keep me from repeating it. Knowledge really is power--or at least prevention.
Hope you're feeling better!
Big hugs,
Jean Marie

Meh...I was hoping you'd been able to retrieve your data.

Well...at least there's a patch to help you going forward. And perhaps you can retrieve the old inbox someday.

Me, I've managed an ENTIRE DAY without a nap. Go me. I might kick this bug yet. Tired, though, and am headed to bed.

Ooooh.

Wait. It's on the old computer? Can you bring up Eudora on the old computer and send or forward the items to yourself on the new one? That's probably the long and slow way to do it unless you can find the mailbox files and port them over now that you've got things cleaned out so there might be room.

I could, but my "cunning plan" for the 'puter transfer is to simply copy stuff to disc I don't plan to use every day. I haven't even loaded Eudora onto the new 'puter. I'm not sure it could handle Vista.
And before you ask, yes, I'm working on the old computer today. Call it the electronic equivalent of comfort food. So lame, I know. LOL

Jean Marie

Argh, Vista. Don't get me started. I've done OK installing everything as Admin, and also the first time I run an app, I also RUN As Admin. Then it seems to be OK. But that first week sucked mighty donkey bollocks.

On the other hand, Vista's been good for keeping all sorts of crap the employees *cough cough* might like to install OFF the machine. They don't get the admin password, so we don't have the same trouble with viruses and a million chat programs.

And on the other other hand, everyone at MicroSloth probably can tell every time we go to the bathroom at the shop.

*shrug*

Love my Mac at home though. :-) But I well remember when I had to shift from Old Little Mac to New Little Mac...that was hard, letting go...

My big thing on the Vista machine is iTunes. I LURVES the way it handles any kind of download. Of course, time spent watching or listening to downloads is time spent not writing. Like I need more excuses. LOL

Jean Marie

"not in anyplace I can find"

Try a search for

*.mbx

That should lead you to where the files are stored.

Date: 2008-03-09 05:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] jmward14.livejournal.com
{{{{realthog}}}} I did that--and a couple of other possible combinations besides. The file apparently got corrupted, per the discussions at the University of Wisconsin help page. All the .mbx files showed were the corrupted mailboxes.
Hugs and thanks for the thought,
Jean Marie
